Welcome to the WinMx Effex WinMx Websites section of the site.
Here, we've endeavoured to to list and review all the extant WinMx websites on the internet, that have some value. In fact part of the justification for this WinMx Effex website, was inspired by what these other sites lack. And so because of this apparent dearth of comprehensive, organized, articulate WinMx websites, we've included a review of each website's scope, quality and and usability and a rating from 1 to 10 (ten being the unattainable best). The pages on this website, WinMx Effex, can be checked for W3.org validation on any page of the website, by clicking on the W3.org validations stickers for CSS and HTML in the right hand column, second box down.
Without further adieu, and in no particular order, here is a list of all the other relevant WinMx websites on the internet:
Review:
HTML SECTION: WinMxWorld is the most comprehensive of all the websites listed here. It is also one of the most disorganized. The html section of the site is erratic at best, and seems to be a bit of a hodge-podge mix of elements. There is no orderly fashion to navigate the html area of this website. The only organized part of this html area of the website, is the archive section, but rather than organize systematically the WinMx software by theme, it is organized by author, which leaves a visitor with some frustration, unless they are already well apprised of the significant authors of WinMx related software, because you cannot easily navigate and directly compare, for instance, all the WinMx Chat Servers. Visitors to this site looking for something particular, like Chat Servers, would have to search through numerous folders in their basic hierarchical "tree" structure, through each author. The tutorials included in this html area are plentiful, but again, the organization is difficult to manage, mostly because of a poor layout.
FORUM SECTION: The forum on this website is abundant, repelete with help on almost any WinMx help topic, but again, the forum too suffers from a lack of clear organization. Also, the forum here, like on many other "WinMx" websites, attempts to tackle issues unrelated to WinMx, diluting the efficacy and widening the scope too far beyond WinMx. If PC help is needed, it's best to refer to a PC help website/forum, not a WinMx forum. Another negative element that is exhibited on this forum, is the sheer politics, posturing and divisiveness of many of the contributing members on this WinMxWorld Forum. And we at WinMx Effex are unafraid to "name names" and you will find some of the most prominent members/moderators/administrators of this WinMxWorld forum, listed on our Mx Personalities page here on this website WinMx Effex. There is no free speech on this forum and you are at the mercy of the administration, as to whether they will allow your posts or not. What is "offensive" on this forum is variably defined, depending on how close of pals you are with the administration.
Both the HTML and FORUM sections of this website suffer from an exclusivity, an "old boys network" phenomena, where you have to be their pal in order for them to list your software. Ask Richy. You won't find such pettiness on WinMx Effex. To its credit, WinMxWorld still has a very active forum, well staffed with knowledgeable people ready to help with any WinMx related issue.
AESTHETICS: In general, this website is ugly. The colours chosen do not reflect a WinMx feel, nor are the colours particularly cohesive.
CODING: This site is full of html errors when tested at w3.org for validation. Validation is essential for cross-browser compatibility so that visitors using most any browser, will enjoy consistent experiences on the website. The main index page of WinMxWorld's validation results can be found here.
RATING: 7.5
2. Vlad44.com
Review:
HTML SECTION: Vladd44.com's HTML is littered with google ads, making it seem like most other websites littered with ads: low class. At one time, Vladd44.com was a force to be reckoned in the world of WinMx, but has fallen by the wayside, since. Many of the links in the help section are dead links, an indication of growing irrelevance. The HTML section is not devoted to WinMx and covers various topics including WinMX, BitTorrent, Video, Computer Problem, Ubuntu/Linux, & PHP scripts & phpBB3 Mods (see above for discussion on non-Mx dedicated websites). None of the non-WinMx areas are of enough specialization to be of much interest to anyone, beyond a brief introduction. This HTML section devoted to WinMx help, suffers from the same disorganization as WinMxWorld.com, and is less comprehensive. Still offering the Eagle patched version of WinMx and some helpful tutorials, this site still has some value for WinMxers.
FORUM SECTION: The forum section of this website, at one time, was among the most active WinMx related forums on the internet, but has since been relegated to near total neglect. Nonetheless, the forum contains a rich mixture of history and WinMx help, and for that alone is worth a bookmarking. The forum layout, though, does not lend itself to easily navigating to WinMx solutions or downloads. This forum supports the spirit of free speech, and only rarely have threads been locked or posts deleted.
AESTHETICS: This site, having undergone multiple aesthetic redesigns over the years, has never been able to obtain anything more than "ugly". Perhaps this is done so that the ads on the site are more of a draw than the articles.
CODING: This website is chock full of HTML errors, from simple HTML tags not being closed properly, omitted alt tags and invalid characters - largely due to coder laziness. The main page of this site is shown to have no less than 182 HTML errors which can be viewed here.
RATING: 6.5
3. MxStuff.org
Review:
HTML SECTION: The HTML section of this website is very narrowly focused only on the chat server WCS and related documentation, and KM's original WinMx patch. For the meagre amount of information therein, this site is organized fairly well.
FORUM SECTION: The forum, now collecting dust, is and never was much of a resource for general WinMx help, although the WCS related help here is of some value to Mx Hosts using WCS.
AESTHETICS: MxStuff.org has slightly better attuned aesthetics than the previous two sites mentioned, though it still isn't much to look at.
CODING: The site cannot be validated by w3.org at all, because of a gzip compression file flaw, so the pages cannot be readily tested for their coding quality. The results of the attempt to test this site for validation can be seen here.
RATING: 4.0
4. WinMxAddicts
Review:
HTML SECTION: There is HTML component to this website at all.
FORUM SECTION: This is a "free" subdomain of freeforums.org, so it suffers from advertisements cluttering up the presentation, and the "fly by night" feel of all the "free" type WinMx websites on the internet. The forum section of this website is largely inactive, though some few forums have seen some action over the past couple of years. Its best value is in its fairly up to date download section for Chat Servers, and the Metis Scripts area of the forum.
AESTHETICS: This site, though choosing Halloween colours for its forum, is not totally unaesthetic.
CODING: This site suffers from some few lazy coding errors which, for the main forum page, can be viewed here.
